In March 2021, the National Council on Public History named the RCIBSL Project the honorable mention for its 2021 Outstanding Public History Project Award. Zimmer and his volunteer colleague, Heather Dawn Thompson (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe) accepted the award on behalf of the project team.
