With the 50th anniversary of Selma on the horizon, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has launched a film series entitled Created Equal. The four films in the series chronicle efforts to win civil rights for African Americans from the time of the Abolitionists to the Freedom Rides of 1961. With support from NEH, the Siouxland Libraries recently screened these films for the Sioux Falls community. On Saturday, February 28, historian Eric John Abrahamson, who is writing a book on philanthropy and civil rights, moderated a panel discussion that featured three long-time residents of the Sioux Falls African-American community talking about what it was like to come of age as black men in South Dakota in the late 1950s and 1960s. The discussion was taped by the Library.
